What is Balayage?
Balayage comes from the French word balayer, which means “to sweep.” When hair salons use this no-foil technique on bio hair, they use a coloring brush to “paint” hair. Stylists will skim the top layer of hair with lightner. They start at the ends then “sweep” the hair upwards towards the root to create a grown-out look. Many stylists will even balayage strands around the face, creating brightness they may refer to as a “money piece.” When you see balayage wigs, you’ll notice the hair is darkest at the roots and lightest at the bottom.
What is the Difference Between Balayage and Ombre?
Even though these two hair trends look like similar hairstyles, they have some pretty significant differences. Both terms represent a gradient-like transition of color on hair with ombre showing a more dramatic change while balayage shows a more subtle transition.
If you are unclear about what an ombre is, an ombre is most commonly colored to be a gradual phase of dark to light. Your roots remain natural or darkened if need be, and then your hair fades to a lighter color.
Ombre has a bolder contrast and the colors look blocky on the hair. On the other hand, balayage is more subtle with a smooth and gradual transition.
